Trump Demands Imprisonment of Chicago Mayor and State Executive as National Guard Arrive in Metropolis

Ex-President Donald Trump on midweek called for the incarceration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect federal immigration officers.

"Chicago's Mayor should be jailed for endangering ICE Officers!" Trump posted on his platform early Wednesday. "Governor Pritzker too!"

Both officials are members of the Democratic party.

These remarks coincide with the deployment of National Guard personnel in the Windy City area under orders from the federal administration, despite strong objections from Illinois authorities such as the governor and mayor.

"This represents not the first instance where Trump attempted to have a Black man unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I am staying put."

The governor responded via online channels, declaring: "I refuse to back down. Trump is now demanding arrests of democratically chosen representatives resisting his authority. What's next on the path to complete authoritarianism?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard units from Texas had reached the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation roughly 50 miles from the city, as the federal government advances with its hardline urban crime policy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has called Chicago a "crime-ridden disaster zone", despite police data indicate notable reductions in many offenses, including homicides.

On Wednesday, two hundred state guard troops were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with another 300 Illinois guard forces readying for deployment, per reports. Officials indicated the troops would avoid law enforcement duties but would protect federal immigration agents and government buildings.

Military personnel in combat attire with state guard patches were observed at the US army reserve center in Elwood. Vehicles marked "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered portable toilets and essential items. Mobile units were arranged in rows. Additional fencing was installed around the perimeter.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered no-fly zones over the military base for security reasons until 6 December.

The administration has escalated immigration enforcement in the city in recent weeks, sparking protests, especially near an processing facility in Broadview.

Earlier this week, Illinois and Chicago initiated legal action against the administration, seeking to block the National Guard deployment, asking a court to stop what they call "the president's proclaimed 'War'" on Chicago and Illinois, calling it "illegal and dangerous".

Legal proceedings on their lawsuit is set for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also issued an directive on that day prohibiting federal immigration agents and related personnel from using city-owned property as operation bases for enforcement actions.

Pritzker has accused Trump of using troops as "political props" and "chess pieces".

During a press briefing on the previous day, he said that Trump is attempting to "rationalize and make acceptable the presence of armed soldiers under his personal authority."

The nearly 150-year-old federal law restricts the army's involvement in enforcing domestic laws. Yet, the president has said he would be prepared to invoke the emergency powers, which permits a president to send regular army in regions that are unable to suppress an uprising or are defying national authority.

Since starting his new administration, the president has sent or discussed sending troops to over ten urban centers, such as major metropolitan areas and West Coast locations like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, claiming that the armed forces is essential to fight violence and protect immigration agents.

Statistics indicates that serious offenses across the US has declined in recent years. In Chicago, for instance, murders were down nearly one-third to 278 through late summer, according to police data.

New survey data released on that day found that the majority of US citizens oppose the sending of troops without an external threat.
