The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
