Exposing Venezuela Celebration Footage and AI Images of Maduro.

Synthetic images claiming to portray Nicolás Maduro detained following his capture by the United States have garnered tens of millions of views on social media.

How AI Images of Maduro Appeared Within Hours

The first fake AI image seemingly showing him being escorted off a aircraft circulated a brief time later. The graphic was unpublished by any official US channels; rather, it was uploaded on the platform X by an account describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.

Verification involved an AI-watermark detector, confirming the image was created or altered with generative AI.

Further synthetic pictures started circulating in the following period, appearing to show more angles of the leader under guard. Discernible logos on these images reveal they were posted by an Instagram profile named ultravfx.

The detection tool indicates all of these images were likewise generated or edited AI technology.

Authentic Image Released but Fakes Persisted

The former US president released the initial authentic image of Maduro in handcuffs aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. However, despite this confirmation was published, AI-generated pictures continued to spread but were altered to show the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.

Digital forensics show the new fake images were first posted on TikTok by a digital art profile. Similarly, the AI-watermark detector found these further images were created or altered Google AI.

Main Takeaways:

  • Deepfakes gained traction after the news of Maduro's capture.
  • The first fake picture was shared on the same day on social media.
  • Tools like Google’s SynthID were used to confirm the images as inauthentic.
  • Fake images persisted to spread and evolve even after the release of real images.
  • The origin of several fabricated images was traced to social media accounts focused on graphic design.
