The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
